Al Khor Is Qatar's Hardest Place to Dry Laundry. Here Are the Numbers

Qatar is a small country. From Al Khor to Al Rayyan is 47.7 kilometres, which is less than an hour of driving. You would not expect the weather to be meaningfully different at either end, and for most purposes it is not.

For drying laundry, it is. We pulled ten years of daily records, 2016 to 2025, for each of the six cities we cover, taken at each city's own coordinates rather than a single national figure. Al Khor came out the most humid of the six, and the margin is not trivial.

Quick answer: Al Khor averages 3.2 percentage points more humid than the Qatari mean, the highest of the six cities. Four months of the year, November through February, sit above 63% humidity, when washing hung outside may not dry at all. April is the one month that works cleanly.

The Measured Year in Al Khor

• January: 69.2% humidity. Too wet to dry reliably.
• February: 67.1%. Still too wet.
• March: 59.6%. Workable, slow.
• April: 50.2%. The best month of the year.
• May: 41.9%. Dry air, but the heat is arriving.
• June: 40.6%. The driest month, and the hottest risk.
• July: 49.3%. Humidity climbing again while the heat holds.
• August: 56.0%. Humid and hot at once.
• September: 59.3%. Still hot, getting wetter.
• October: 60.7%. The heat breaking, the damp returning.
• November: 63.9%. Back above the line where drying fails.
• December: 69.3%. The wettest month of the Al Khor year.

Why Al Khor and Not Al Rayyan

The comparison that makes the point is Al Khor against Al Rayyan, the driest of the six. In June, Al Khor sits at 40.6% and Al Rayyan at 32.9%. That is a 7.7 point gap in the driest month of the year, between two cities 48 kilometres apart.

The reason is position rather than anything exotic. Al Khor sits on the north east coast with shallow water on three sides and the mangrove flats at Al Thakhira immediately beside it. Air moving over warm shallow water picks up moisture and arrives carrying it. Al Rayyan sits inland with desert between it and the coast in the prevailing direction, so the same air has given up much of that moisture before it gets there.

Wet fabric releases water only as fast as the surrounding air will accept it. When the air is already carrying 69% of what it can hold, there is very little room left for the water in your washing.

The Four Months That Do Not Work

November, December, January and February all average above 63% humidity in Al Khor, and the daily maximum in those months is too low to make up for it. That combination is the one that actually defeats a washing line: a load hung out on a December evening can genuinely still be damp the following morning, and damp cotton left overnight starts to smell before it finishes drying.

By comparison Al Rayyan has two such months and Umm Salal has two. Al Khor has four. If you have moved to Al Khor from inland Qatar and your usual winter routine has stopped working, that is the reason, and it is not your machine.

The Summer Problem Is a Different Problem

From May onward the humidity drops and drying speeds up, so summer looks like the answer. It is not, because the constraint changes rather than disappearing. Six months of the Al Khor year average above 33C at the daily maximum. At those temperatures the risk stops being damp air and becomes ultraviolet fade on coloured fabric, and dust settling into cloth while it is still wet.

Dust that lands on dry fabric brushes off. Dust that lands on wet fabric is drawn into the weave as the water evaporates and sets there. That is a re-wash, not a nuisance. So the summer rule in Al Khor is shade and airflow, never open sun, and bring the load in the moment it is dry.

What Works

• April: the one clean month. 50.2% humidity and not yet hot enough to fade colour.
• March: workable at 59.6%, slower than it looks.
• May to October: shade only, with airflow, and never in overhead sun.
• November to February: indoors, or send it out. This is the honest answer rather than the sales one.
• Any month: turn coloured items inside out. Qatar's UV load is high even in the months that never reach 33C.
