A hazy day outside means fine dust inside, on rugs, sills and sofas.

Anyone who has lived through a Doha summer knows the haze that settles over the skyline and the fine layer that follows it indoors. It is not your imagination that it is worse some months than others. The numbers show exactly when.

Quick answer: Dust over Doha is lowest in November and peaks in July and August, when monthly levels run about five times higher. Across the whole year Doha carries more dust than Dubai or Abu Dhabi in the same data. Deep clean in October, after the summer peak, and after a storm clean only once the air has cleared, dry methods first.

How Much Dust Doha Gets

We looked at three years of modelled surface dust (2023 to 2025) for Doha:

  • Lowest: about 55 µg/m³ on average in November.
  • Highest: about 271 µg/m³ in July and 233 µg/m³ in August.
  • Heavy dust days: days averaging more than 200 µg/m³ came to about 92 a year, and about 21 of them fell in July alone.
  • Compared with the UAE: Doha averaged about 143 µg/m³ across the year, against about 102 for Dubai and 92 for Abu Dhabi city in the same model.

The model point that covers Doha also covers Al Rayyan, so these figures describe both.

In Doha, one day in four is a heavy dust day. July brings about three weeks of them.

How to Clean After a Dust Storm

  • Wait for the air to clear. Dust keeps falling for hours after the wind drops, so keep windows and balcony doors shut until the haze has gone.
  • Dry first, wet second. Vacuum rugs, sofas, curtains and sliding door tracks before any mopping. A wet cloth on fine dust makes a paste.
  • Work top to bottom. AC grilles and light fittings, then shelves and furniture, then floors.
  • Use microfibre, which holds fine dust instead of spreading it.
  • Clear the balcony last, and vacuum the tracks so sand does not wear the runners.

What This Means in Practice

Tower apartments in West Bay and Msheireb Downtown mostly collect dust on balconies, sills and AC grilles. Villas and low-rise homes in Al Sadd, Bin Mahmoud, Al Hilal and around Old Airport have more doors, courtyards and outdoor furniture, and need attention after every big storm.

A deep clean in October, once the summer peak has passed, and a regular clean through the year covers most homes. Our guide on how often to deep clean a home in Qatar sets out a schedule, and our Doha summer villa tips cover the hot months.
