Dust Season in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: When to Deep Clean
If your balcony turns beige overnight and the sofa feels gritty by the afternoon, you already know Abu Dhabi has a dust season. What most people do not know is how uneven it is: the same home can need very different care in November and in August, and a villa in Al Ain faces far more dust than an apartment on the island.
Quick answer: In Abu Dhabi city, dust is lowest from November to January and peaks in July and August, when monthly levels run about six times higher. Al Ain gets more than twice the city's dust across the year. Book a deep clean after the summer peak, in late September or October, and clean after a storm only once the air has cleared, dry methods first.
How Much Dust Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Actually Get
We looked at three years of modelled surface dust (2023 to 2025) for one point in Abu Dhabi city and one in Al Ain. The pattern is clear:
- Abu Dhabi city: monthly averages of about 31 to 38 µg/m³ from November to January, rising to about 213 µg/m³ in July and 193 µg/m³ in August.
- Heavy dust days: days with an average above 200 µg/m³ came to about 42 a year in the city, and more than 13 of them fell in each of July and August.
- Al Ain: an average of about 213 µg/m³ across the whole year, against 92 in the city, and about 154 heavy dust days a year. August was the worst month at about 379 µg/m³.
- The quiet month: November was the cleanest month in both places.
Across a whole year, an average day in Al Ain carries about as much dust as an average July day in Abu Dhabi city.
Why Wiping Straight Away Makes It Worse
Sandstorm dust is extremely fine. A wet cloth on a dusty surface turns it into a thin paste that settles into grout, fabric and the grain of wooden furniture. Dust also keeps falling for hours after the wind drops, so cleaning in the middle of an event means doing it twice.
- Wait for the air to clear. Keep windows and balcony doors shut until the haze has gone.
- Dry first, wet second. Vacuum floors, upholstery, curtains and sliding door tracks before any mopping or wiping.
- Work top to bottom. Light fittings, AC grilles, shelves, then furniture, then floors.
- Use microfibre. It holds fine dust instead of pushing it around.
- Do the balcony last, and rinse the tracks so sand does not grind the door runners.
The Places Dust Hides
- Sliding door and window tracks, where it grinds the runners
- AC return grilles and filters, which then blow it back into the room
- Curtains and sofa seams
- The tops of wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and door frames
- Balcony furniture cushions and plant pots
Our deep clean wipes AC vent grilles, but cleaning inside the ducts is a separate specialist job. Our guide to AC duct cleaning vs house cleaning explains the difference.
What This Means in Practice
For apartments on Al Reem Island, Al Khalidiyah or Abu Dhabi Island, a regular clean through the year and one deep clean after the summer peak covers most homes. Villas in Khalifa City and on Yas Island have more glass, terraces and outdoor furniture, so they benefit from an extra clean after any big storm.
In Al Ain and around Al Ain Oasis, the dust load is heavy for most of the year, not just in summer. A deep clean every three months, plus a quick clean after the worst storms, is a sensible routine there. Our guide on how often to deep clean a home in the UAE sets out a room-by-room schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a deep clean cost in Abu Dhabi?
House cleaning in Abu Dhabi starts from AED 50 an hour for regular cleaning, and a deep clean is priced by home size: AED 400 for a studio, AED 500 for one bedroom, AED 650 for two, AED 850 for a three-bedroom apartment and AED 1,000 for a three-bedroom villa. Larger villas are quoted on WhatsApp.
Can you come the same day after a sandstorm?
Yes. Bookings made before noon can usually be cleaned the same day, 7 days a week, subject to crew availability. The busiest days are the ones right after a big storm, so book early.
Should I clean during a sandstorm?
No. Keep windows shut and wait until the air clears. Cleaning during the event just means cleaning again afterwards.
When is the best month for a deep clean?
Late September or October, after the July and August peak. November is the quietest month for dust in both Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, so a clean then tends to last longest.
