Curtains and Sofas, The Dust You Cannot See

Ask when someone last cleaned their curtains and the answer is usually a pause. They are the biggest piece of fabric in the room, they sit against the window where outside air comes in, and because they are vertical they never look dirty, the dust does not sit on top of them, it embeds into the weave.

What they are actually holding

In Bahrain, curtains take the full load of fine airborne dust, plus cooking residue that carries surprisingly far from a kitchen, and in coastal areas a trace of salt. Add condensation on the glass in summer, which keeps the lower part of a curtain slightly damp, and you have the conditions for the musty smell people blame on the air conditioning.

The usual giveaway is comparative: take a curtain down and hold it against a clean one, or look at the difference between the front face and the hem tucked behind a sofa. The gap is often startling.

How often

Roughly once a year for most rooms, and every six months for a majlis, a room where people smoke, or a kitchen-adjacent window. Sheers need it more often than heavy drapes because the dust shows and because they are usually the layer against the glass.

The shrinkage trap

The most common curtain disaster is self-inflicted. Lined curtains have two fabrics, face and lining, and they very often shrink at different rates in water. The result is a curtain that hangs with a rippled, puckered edge, or one that no longer reaches the floor. It cannot be fixed afterwards.

Heavy drapes have a second problem: soaked with water they become extremely heavy, and the weight tears the header tape or pulls the hooks straight out. This is why curtains are usually a dry clean rather than a wash, and why "just put them in the machine" ends badly more often than not.

Taking them down

Photograph the header and the hook spacing before you unhook anything. Reinstalling curtains is where an afternoon disappears, particularly with pleated headers where the hook positions determine how the pleats sit. Count the hooks and keep them in a bag rather than in the fabric.

If the rail is high or the drapes are heavy, this is worth having done for you rather than balanced on a chair, most of the damage we see to header tape happens during removal, not cleaning.

Sofas and upholstery

Upholstery collects body oils, food and, in most Bahrain homes, a lot of fine dust in the crevices. Removable covers may be washable but check the label carefully, the same shrinkage risk applies, and a shrunk cover will not go back on. Fixed upholstery needs cleaning in place, matched to the fabric type, with controlled moisture so the foam underneath does not stay wet.

That last point matters here more than elsewhere. Over-wetting a sofa in a humid climate means the foam takes days to dry and the smell that follows is worse than what you started with. Less water, properly extracted, beats a deep soak.
