Yes, it is gentle for little beachgoers. Sand comes out first so nothing scratches skin. The octopus is then rinsed in barely warm water with a fabric safe sanitiser and dried in still air for as long as it takes. Stitched eyes and suckers are tested for grip, and loose ones reported.

Some can be. Octopuses that light up or play bath songs sometimes have a sealed unit inside. If it can be removed, it comes out and goes back later, and if not, it is wrapped and kept dry. Real risk means we ask first.

Yes, every arm should still curl after cleaning. Spinning in a drum would tangle the eight arms together and stretch the thinnest ones, so each is cleaned separately by hand and laid out on its own to dry. Once dry, the plush is brushed up and the arms are coiled back into their curls.

Yes, beach sand carries more than grit. Fine salt and dust work their way deep into the stuffing, where mites happily settle. We shake and brush out the sand first, then press a fabric sanitiser into the filling and leave the octopus to dry to its core, which leaves it properly fresh inside.
