Riffa Sits Further From the Sea Than Any City in Bahrain. Does Laundry Dry Better There?
Riffa is the most inland of Bahrain's ten cities. Its nine districts sit a median 4.1 km from the sea, against 1.2 km for Manama, and one of them, Awali, is the most inland district in the country at 6.4 km. It is also not uniform: Zallaq, on the west coast, is only 0.4 km from the water.
The climate model places Riffa in a different cell from Manama, and across the year that cell runs 1.7 points drier on mean relative humidity. So yes, laundry dries a little more easily here. The catch is the heat.
Quick answer: Riffa is Bahrain's most inland city, a median 4.1 km from the sea, and its air runs 1.7 points drier than Manama's. Laundry dries outdoors reliably in April, May and October, but September is too hot for direct sun.
How Far Riffa'S Districts Sit from the Sea
| District | Distance to the sea |
|---|---|
| Zallaq | 0.4 km |
| Askar | 0.6 km |
| Durrat Al Bahrain | 1.7 km |
| East Riffa | 3.9 km |
| Jaww | 4.1 km |
| Riffa Views | 5.5 km |
| Riffa | 5.5 km |
| West Riffa | 5.7 km |
| Awali | 6.4 km |
On median distance Riffa ranks 10 of 10, from the most coastal city, Muharraq, to the most inland, Riffa. Across all of Bahrain, 99 of 104 districts are within 5 km of the coast, which is why coastal salt is a laundry question almost everywhere on the island.
Drier Air, But a Longer Summer
Riffa's cell is fractionally hotter as well as drier, and that tips September over the line. In Manama September averages 33.5°C and rates Workable. In Riffa it averages 33.6°C and joins June, July and August as a shade-only month, when direct sun fades colour and blown dust settles on wet fabric.
Riffa's air is drier than Manama's. Its September is also hotter, and that is the month the difference shows.
The dependable months are the same as Manama's: April, May and October. In those months a load hung out in the morning is dry well before evening. Outside them, dry in the shade or indoors, and turn dark garments inside out.

Bahrain is small enough that the ERA5 climate model reads the whole island in three cells about 25 km across, so these are cell values, not street-level readings. What This Means in Practice
- April, May and October: dry outdoors, ideally hung early and in before sunset.
- June, July, August and September: shade only. Direct sun fades colour and dust settles on wet fabric; turn dark garments inside out.
- January, February and December: dry indoors with airflow. Humidity can stop a load drying overnight.
- Salt is a smaller factor: most Riffa districts are more than 2 km from the coast, so humidity and sun decide the day. More in protecting clothes from humidity and salt air.
- Bedding and towels hold moisture longest, so they are the first thing to move indoors in humid months. See how often to wash bedding and towels.
The Short Version
- Distance to the sea: a median 4.1 km across Riffa's 9 districts, from Zallaq at 0.4 km to Awali at 6.4 km.
- Most humid month: December, at 69.1% mean relative humidity.
- Dry outdoors: April, May and October.
- Shade only: June, July, August and September.
- Avoid: January, February and December.
