Sitra Laundry: Drier Air Than Manama, and a Longer Summer

Sitra sits in the south-eastern cell of the climate model, with Riffa, and across the year that cell runs 1.7 points drier on mean relative humidity than Manama. Its nine districts range from Sitra, 0.2 km from the sea, to Nuwaidrat at 3.0 km, a median of 1.8 km.

Drier air helps. It is not the whole story.

Quick answer: Sitra's air runs 1.7 points drier than Manama's, but its September averages 33.7°C, too hot for direct sun. Dry outdoors in April, May and October, in the shade from June to September, and indoors in January, February and December.

How Far Sitra'S Districts Sit from the Sea

Distance from each Sitra district centre to the nearest coastline. Laundrykhalas district coordinates against the Natural Earth 10m coastline.
DistrictDistance to the sea
Sitra0.2 km
Kawarah1.4 km
Tubli1.5 km
Nabih Saleh1.7 km
Wadyan1.8 km
Al Eker2.0 km
Ma'ameer2.0 km
Jurdab2.4 km
Nuwaidrat3.0 km

On median distance Sitra ranks 6 of 10, from the most coastal city, Muharraq, to the most inland, Riffa. Across all of Bahrain, 99 of 104 districts are within 5 km of the coast, which is why coastal salt is a laundry question almost everywhere on the island.

Why September Is Different in Sitra

The same cell that is drier is also fractionally hotter. September averages 33.7°C in Sitra against 33.5°C in Manama, and that is enough to make it a shade-only month, alongside June, July and August. In those months the risk is not damp washing but UV fade and dust settling on wet fabric.

Drier air helps washing dry. A hotter sun undoes it, and in Sitra September is where the two meet.

Humidity still peaks in December at 69.2%, and January, February and December rate Avoid. The dependable outdoor months are April, May and October.

Bahrain is small enough that the ERA5 climate model reads the whole island in three cells about 25 km across, so these are cell values, not street-level readings. For the method and the Manama calendar, see can you line-dry in Bahrain and why clothes dry slower in winter. Nearby, laundry in Riffa has Riffa's drying calendar.

What This Means in Practice

  • April, May and October: dry outdoors, ideally hung early and in before sunset.
  • June, July, August and September: shade only. Direct sun fades colour and dust settles on wet fabric; turn dark garments inside out.
  • January, February and December: dry indoors with airflow. Humidity can stop a load drying overnight.
  • After a sea breeze: most Sitra districts are within 2 km of the coast, so rinse salt out before storage. More in protecting clothes from humidity and salt air.
  • Bedding and towels hold moisture longest, so they are the first thing to move indoors in humid months. See how often to wash bedding and towels.

The Short Version

  • Distance to the sea: a median 1.8 km across Sitra's 9 districts, from Sitra at 0.2 km to Nuwaidrat at 3.0 km.
  • Most humid month: December, at 69.2% mean relative humidity.
  • Dry outdoors: April, May and October.
  • Shade only: June, July, August and September.
  • Avoid: January, February and December.
